Your ChatGPT traffic didn’t crash: your tracking did

If your referral traffic for ChatGPT took a nosedive on October 9, there’s no need to immediately adjust your marketing strategy. It was probably a tracking issue.

Driving the news: According to Graphite CEO Ethan Smith, ChatGPT-related referral traffic in Google Analytics 4 began plummeting 22-57% on October 9. Overall, it fell by approximately 45% compared to the baseline. Additionally, according to LLM Pulse, ChatGPT sessions from October 9-11 fell by approximately 46% compared to the two preceding weeks.

The tell: During those periods, overall site traffic was flat. The traffic didn’t disappear, it was mislabeled.

What happened: Starting on October 9, ChatGPT began opening links in its answer text without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag or a referrer. Google Analytics then attributed those visits as “Direct” traffic. Cedric Huesler of Adobe also noted the same behavior across approximately 500 different pages.

Why it matters: This presents an obstacle when relying on AEO measurement. You can get very visible in AI answers, but your dashboard says it collapsed because the platforms control tagging and can change it at any time without notice.

What to do:

  • Don’t jump to conclusions. First, check your Direct channel to see if it also rose by about the same amount on the same day the AI channel collapsed.
  • Log tagging changes as you do with algorithm changes.
  • Keep in mind tagging is a courtesy and may not be reliable.

The bottom line: Expect the unpredictable and always measure AI visibility as if your ruler is going to change length.
