Reddit’s CEO Wants Users Earning Their Way Into Subreddits. Brands Chasing AI Citations Should Earn Standing in Other People’s Communities Before Building Their Own

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman told moderators at Mod World on Oct. 24 that “the job of the home feed, the job of the app, is to get users into subreddits,” according to a Search Engine Journal column on the session, an informal AMA (ask me anything, Reddit’s open Q&A format). The column’s author, whose agency OGS Media sells organic Reddit marketing, reads it as more reason for brands to build their own communities on Reddit.

The reflex will follow fast: Reddit gets cited in AI answers, so launch a brand subreddit. My read is that this gets the order wrong, and Huffman’s own plans show why.

What did Huffman actually say?

Membership may have to be earned. Huffman described an idea he is still working through: separating following a subreddit from joining it, so a newcomer would observe first, comment later, and vote only once their contributions were well received. He gave no date and did not say what joining would require.

New accounts already struggle. Huffman said Reddit’s automatic filter, AutoModerator (AutoMod), bans 30% of posts from new users, and that the vast majority of those posts are fine.

On bots, Huffman said the time to take down spam and suspected-bot content fell from 45 minutes to two minutes over the past year, and put bots below 2%, citing third-party research he did not name, and without saying 2% of what. The columnist notes he did not explain how either figure was measured. He added that some “bots” are humans pasting ChatGPT output. “Our product is humans,” he said.

He also wants businesses clearly identified, with moderators deciding what belongs.

Where does Reddit sit in AEO?

In The AEO Process, the framework I laid out in my post on Google’s AI guide, Reddit and forums are surface three of six. Comparison content and third-party “best of” lists come first. Your own website comes last.

Reddit and Quora now appear in 14% of all AI Overviews, a 340% increase compared to 2024, according to Semrush data cited by HubSpot. In a study conducted with Reddit across the U.S., UK and Germany, 69% of people using Reddit for product research said they were looking for other people’s opinions or experiences, SEJ reported.

Other people’s opinions are what surface three is made of. A brand speaking for itself is not.

Should your brand start its own subreddit?

In my view, a brand-run subreddit sits closer to surface six than surface three. Models discount brand-owned content on competitive queries because the brand has a conflict of interest. A subreddit moderated by your team and filled with your staff’s answers carries the same conflict on a different domain. I have not seen data on whether AI engines treat brand subreddits differently from independent ones, so this is my position, not a measured finding.

A brand subreddit earns its keep where there is a recurring need: setup, support, troubleshooting. The columnist sets the same condition. Those threads are Q&A by nature, one of the formats that correlate with citation share. If customers start answering each other there, it begins to behave like surface three.

What should marketers do now?

Start by mapping. Send your highest-value category queries to ChatGPT and Perplexity and log which subreddits appear in the citations. That list beats your gut list.

Then earn standing early. If the follow-and-join idea ships, a brand account opened in a hurry starts at “observe.” Huffman’s own number shows the cost of rushing: AutoMod removes 30% of new users’ posts. Put a named, qualified employee on a disclosed account, read each target subreddit’s rules, and comment before you post. The columnist makes the point well: disclosure doesn’t earn permission on its own. The answers still have to be useful.

Keep AI out of the comments. eMarketer reported that Reddit’s automated systems removed 25,000 spammy posts and comments a day in Q1 2026, according to Amsive. Generated brand replies are the material those systems are built to catch, and they lack the experience that 69% came for.

For measurement, I would track how often Reddit threads that mention you show up in AI answers for your category queries, and log model release dates next to that data. The columnist, whose agency builds subreddits, measures something else: whether people get useful answers, return with follow-up questions and help one another. Both are worth watching, and they will not always move together.

What is still not known?

Huffman gave no date for earned membership. Whether a more subreddit-centred Reddit changes which threads AI engines retrieve is unknown.

Reddit’s Q2 shareholder letter already described building a daily destination. Watch whether a later letter puts a date on earned membership.
