China Already Wrote the GEO Rulebook. The West Is Still Arguing About Definitions.

Our industry has spent a year arguing about what GEO even is. China got burned on national television and wrote the answer down in six months.

Start with the scandal. In a March 2026 segment on CCTV’s 3·15 gala, the country’s biggest consumer-protection broadcast, an insider sat in front of a hidden camera and invented a smart wristband that does not exist. Software spun up more than a dozen promotional articles. He added 11 more by hand: expert reviews, industry rankings, user evaluations. When reporters later asked AI models to recommend a smart wristband, at least two listed the fake device in their top picks.

It took hours. Not months. And nothing about the trick depended on the models being Chinese.

Six months later, China’s advertising industry shipped a five-part standard that defines what generative engine optimization is, how its results should be measured, what a GEO contract is allowed to promise, and where optimization stops and manipulation starts. That last line is the one the West keeps dodging.

Why this should bother you

Read the demo again. A fabricated product, a stack of auto-generated “reviews,” and two AI models repeating it as a recommendation. That is not a Chinese problem. That is the default failure mode of any answer engine that treats volume and structure as trust. The same playbook works in English this afternoon.

We have spent the year selling GEO services with no agreed definition of the deliverable, no measurement standard, and no shared line for what counts as manipulation. A fake-wristband segment exposes all three gaps at once.

What is worth borrowing

I have watched the Chinese search market for years, and this is the first time I would tell a Western SEO to read a Chinese industry standard closely. Not because it is perfect. Because it answers the questions we keep arguing about instead of resolving.

Three in particular are worth stealing. A definition of GEO that a client and an agency can both point to. A measurement method, so “we improved your AI visibility” means something you can check. And a stated boundary between optimization and manipulation, so the fake-wristband move is out of bounds on paper, not just in hindsight.

Bottom line

The uncomfortable part is not that China moved first. It is that they moved because they got caught, and we have not been caught yet. The manipulation is this cheap everywhere. Write your own rules before a regulator, or a hidden camera, writes them for you.
