AEO INDEX OCTOBER 2026 USA: Toyota is ranked first in 18 of 30 AI answers about cars, and only three other brands win a single question
Reports · Answer Engine Daily

The three engines agree on the top car brand for 6 of 10 questions, and most of the time the brand they agree on is Toyota.

Toyota is the car brand AI names first, and it isn’t close. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews ranked it first in 18 of 30 answers in the October 2026 AEO Index for Cars, and it scores 74.0 on the AI Rank Score. That score runs from 0 to 100 and weights each mention by where it sits in the answer, so 100 would mean first place on every engine for every question. Honda is second at 49.3. Nobody else reaches 30.

Behind Toyota the field is crowded, but the engines rarely put anyone else first. They named 30 brands, and only four won any of the ten questions: Toyota with six, Lexus with two, Ford and Tesla with one each. Honda appears in 80% of answers and was ranked first in none. Hyundai and Kia, named in 70% and 67% of answers, had one first place between them.

The answers were gathered on 21 October 2026 from one U.S. location, with analysis by markaeo.com. Question-level scores are in the full October 2026 report.

How wide is Toyota’s lead?

Toyota won six questions: SUVs, sedans, hybrids, family cars, minivans and cars for first-time buyers. Five of those came with a perfect 100, meaning all three engines put Toyota first. It was also the most visible brand on every engine, named in 87% of answers overall. AI Overviews ranked it first 7 times, Gemini 6 and ChatGPT 5.

Specialists took the other four:

  • Pickup trucks: Ford, at 100, first on all three engines.
  • Electric cars: Tesla, at 70, although ChatGPT put Chevrolet first.
  • Luxury cars: Lexus, at 87, with each engine picking a different brand (BMW on ChatGPT, Porsche on Gemini, Lexus on AI Overviews).
  • Most reliable brands: Lexus again, at 87. AI Overviews picked Toyota here.

The index counts Lexus and Toyota as separate brands, so Lexus’s two wins are kept apart from Toyota’s six.

Where do the engines differ?

Mostly at the edges. They named the same top brand for 6 of the 10 questions, and ChatGPT is behind most of the exceptions, with Chevrolet for electric cars, Hyundai for SUVs and BMW for luxury.

Answer length varies a lot. Gemini averaged about 1,199 words and 10.1 brands per answer, ChatGPT 414 words and 8.2 brands, and AI Overviews about 215 words and 6.2 brands. Even the shortest answers leave room for a third-place brand to be seen. It just isn’t named first.

Where does the car advice come from?

Video, more than any other single place. youtube.com was cited 28 times across 9 questions, and AI Overviews accounts for 25 of those. Video and forum sources made up 42.1% of everything AI Overviews cited. edmunds.com (15) and kbb.com (13) came next, and all three engines cited both.

Brand websites barely show up: 3 of 139 citations, or 2.2%. Gemini cited sources in only 2 of its 10 answers.

We read 53 of the cited pages. Toyota was the most-mentioned brand on 18 of them, Honda on 7. Whether that coverage drives the rankings or just mirrors them, the data doesn’t show.

What does this mean for car brands?

I think that on mainstream questions the engines treat this category as more or less settled, and that changes the job for every brand that isn’t Toyota. Winning “best SUV brands” outright is a long shot when two of the three engines already put Toyota first. The realistic openings are the questions where the engines disagree, luxury and electric cars, plus the specific uses a brand can credibly own, the way Ford owns pickups at 100.

YouTube is the other thing I’d put in front of a car marketing team. When 25 of AI Overviews’ citations come from one video platform, independent video reviews are doing AEO work for car brands, planned or not.

What to watch next

In November I’d watch whether ChatGPT sticks with its own picks on electric cars and SUVs. I’d also watch Nissan, the one expected brand missing this month, since no engine named it for sedans. Scores for every question are in the full October 2026 report.

How we measured: we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews 10 non-branded car questions, for 30 answers in all, collected on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location. AI answers vary by time, place and user. The full method and notice are in the report.
