AEO INDEX OCTOBER 2026 USA: Sony and Bose are each named in 73% of AI headphone answers, but Sony is ranked first 12 times and Bose once

Specialist brands take the niche questions in the October 2026 AEO Index, and two of them appear in just 10% of answers.

When ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews recommend headphones and earbuds, Sony is the brand they most often name first. It tops 12 of 30 answers in Answer Engine Daily’s October 2026 AEO Index, with analysis powered by markaeo.com. Bose is named just as often as Sony, in 73% of answers. It is ranked first once, by Gemini, on noise-cancelling headphones.
Position is most of the gap. Sony’s AI Rank Score is 57.3 and Bose’s is 51.7, with Anker Soundcore and Apple tied a long way back at 27.7. The score weights each mention by where it sits in the answer, from 0 to 100. A brand named first by all three engines on all ten questions would get 100.
Sony wins five of the ten questions. The other five go to five different brands, each of them a specialist. Details are in the full October 2026 report. We collected the answers on 21 October 2026 from one U.S. location.
How far apart are Sony and Bose?
Level on visibility, 11 answers apart on first places. ChatGPT names Bose in 70% of its answers, more than any other brand, and ranks it first in none. The same engine gives Sony five first places, Google AI Overviews gives it four and Gemini three.
Bose’s one first place came on a question Sony won anyway. Gemini put Bose on top for noise-cancelling headphones, but Sony took the question 93 to 87 with first places on ChatGPT and AI Overviews. Over-ear headphones and the overall question went to Sony with a perfect 100, all three engines agreeing.
Apple shows a smaller version of this. It is named in 53% of answers and ranked first once, by Google AI Overviews for wireless earbuds, even though AI Overviews names Apple in only 30% of its answers.
Which brands win the niche questions?
Outside Sony’s five, each question has its own winner:
- Gaming headsets: SteelSeries scores 100, first on all three engines.
- Open-ear headphones: Shokz scores 100, also unanimous.
- Sleep earbuds: Ozlo wins with 93. Gemini ranked Anker Soundcore first.
- Budget earbuds: Anker Soundcore wins with 93, though ChatGPT put JLab first.
- Running earbuds: Beats wins with 87. Each engine picked a different #1.
SteelSeries and Ozlo each appear in 10% of all answers and still win their questions, with 100 and 93.
The phone-calls question is the tightest race in the index. Gemini and AI Overviews both rank Jabra first, but Sony wins it 80 to 77 on ChatGPT’s first place plus its placings elsewhere. Jabra is missing from 4 of the 6 questions where it would be expected, and Samsung from 6 of 7.
Where does AI get its headphone answers?
Almost never from the brands. The engines cited 178 sources from 81 websites, and brands’ own sites got 3 of them (1.7%). The most cited source was Google Shopping cards, 24 times, all in AI Overviews, where they make up 32% of citations.
The review sites split by engine. TechRadar was cited 11 times, nine of them by ChatGPT, while RTINGS was cited 10 times and never by ChatGPT. Reddit (7) and YouTube (5) show up on Gemini and AI Overviews only. Gemini cited any source in just 3 of its 10 answers.
The cited pages do not line up with the rankings either. Of the 90 we read, Apple was the most-mentioned brand on 19 and Anker Soundcore on 18, while Sony and Bose led 13 each. The data does not show why the engines rank Sony first so much more often, or why ChatGPT keeps mentioning Bose without ever putting it in the lead.
What should audio brands take from this?
My read is that headphones show how a mention count can flatter a brand team. Sony and Bose look identical on visibility. On the measure a shopper actually acts on, the first name in a short list, they are 11 answers apart.
The specialists point the other way. SteelSeries and Shokz each own one narrow question on every engine without broad visibility. That is a cheaper fight than “best headphones overall”.
For November I’ll be watching whether ChatGPT ranks Bose first on any question, and whether that 80 to 77 margin on phone calls holds. Question-level tables are in the full October 2026 report.
How we measured: we asked 10 headphone and earbud buying questions on 3 engines, for 30 answers, collected on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location. AI answers vary by time, place and user. The full method and notice are in the report.
