AEO INDEX OCTOBER 2026 USA: Lenovo appears in 97% of AI laptop answers, but Apple is the brand the engines most often name first
Reports · Answer Engine Daily

Only 16 brands are named across 30 answers in the October 2026 AEO Index for laptops, three of them win every question, and Gemini cited just two sources.

Please read the Important notice and disclaimer before using, sharing or quoting these findings.

Lenovo is named in 97% of the laptop answers ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews gave to ten “best laptop brands” questions, and it leads Answer Engine Daily’s October 2026 AEO Index with an AI Rank Score of 71.7. Analysis was powered by markaeo.com. Apple, though, is the brand the engines put first. It tops 16 of the 30 answers to Lenovo’s 9 and wins six of the ten questions.

The AI Rank Score weights every mention by its position, from 0 to 100. Top spot on all three engines for all ten questions would mean 100. Lenovo leads on score with fewer first places because it is almost never left out.

Behind those two the shortlist is tight. Dell is named in 83% of answers and HP in 70%, and neither is ranked first in any of them. Tables are in the full October 2026 report. We collected the answers on 21 October 2026 from one U.S. location.

How small is the AI laptop shortlist?

Sixteen brands are named across all 30 answers, and five of them (Lenovo, Apple, Asus, Dell and HP) each appear in 70% or more. Sixth-placed Acer scores 14.0, a long way down from HP’s 30.3. Only three brands win a question:

  • Apple: students, video editing, programming, lightweight travel, seniors and the overall question. It scores 100 on four of them.
  • Lenovo: business (100), 2-in-1 (100) and budget laptops (87).
  • Asus: gaming laptops, with 93.

Some brands turn up far more on the cited pages than in the answers. Samsung is mentioned on 25% of the 71 cited articles we read, yet it is named in 3% of answers and is missing from 8 of the 9 questions where it would be expected. Microsoft is on 55% of those pages and in 33% of answers. The data does not show why those page mentions don’t carry into the answers.

Where do the engines split?

The three engines agree on the #1 brand for six questions. On the other four, at least one engine picked someone else:

  • Gaming: Gemini ranked Lenovo first. Asus still wins with 93.
  • Budget: Gemini and AI Overviews both put Acer first, but Lenovo takes the question 87 to 80.
  • Programming: ChatGPT picked Lenovo. Apple wins 93 to 87.
  • Seniors: AI Overviews picked Asus. Apple wins 87 to 80.

Each engine has its quirks. ChatGPT names Asus in all ten of its answers and ranks it first once, while Gemini names both Lenovo and Dell in every answer. Acer’s two first places both came on budget laptops, one each from Gemini and AI Overviews.

Where do the answers come from?

Hardly ever from the brands, and hardly ever from Gemini. The engines cited 152 sources from 52 websites, and 8 of those (5.3%) were brands’ own sites. Gemini cited 2 sources across its 10 answers, both in one answer, despite writing the longest replies, about 1,203 words each.

ChatGPT and AI Overviews draw on largely separate sets of sites. ChatGPT’s 63 citations are 60.3% editorial reviews, led by TechRadar (12) and Tom’s Guide (10), with no Reddit or YouTube. AI Overviews goes the other way: its 87 citations lean on Google Shopping cards (20), YouTube (17), RTINGS (7), Reddit (5) and Quora (4), and video and forum pages make up 29.9% of them.

On the cited articles, Apple is the most-mentioned brand on 34 of the 71 we read, far ahead of Lenovo on 12. Dell appears on 69% of them and leads 4.

What does a tight shortlist mean for laptop brands?

My read is that visibility stops telling you much once five brands show up in most answers. What separates the brands here is first place, question by question. That is the number I would take to a leadership team.

Gemini is a different kind of problem. Two citations in ten answers leaves no source trail to work on, so any PR effort aimed at cited pages will show up in ChatGPT and AI Overviews first, if it shows up at all.

For November, I’ll watch whether Dell or HP is ranked first anywhere, and whether the budget split between Acer and Lenovo holds. Engine-by-engine detail is in the full October 2026 report.

How we measured: we asked 10 laptop buying questions on 3 engines, for 30 answers, collected on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location. AI answers vary by time, place and user. The full method and notice are in the report.
