AEO INDEX OCTOBER 2026 USA: Helix and Saatva each appear in 77% of AI mattress answers, but Helix is ranked first in nine of them and Saatva in five

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews agree on the top mattress brand for four of ten questions, and lean heavily on sleep review sites and YouTube to get there.
Please read the Important notice and disclaimer before using, sharing or quoting these findings.
Helix was ranked first in 9 of 30 AI mattress answers in Answer Engine Daily’s October 2026 AEO Index, more than any other brand across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Saatva is named just as often, in 77% of answers, but is ranked first in 5. No other mattress brand appears in more answers.
The catch is in how the two win. Helix took four of the ten buying questions. Saatva took one, back pain, and placed second on five others.
We collected the answers on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location, with analysis powered by markaeo.com. Rankings for every question and engine are in the full October 2026 report.
How do Helix and Saatva compare?
The index scores brands with an AI Rank Score from 0 to 100, which rewards being named near the top of an answer; first place on every engine and question would score 100. Helix scored 58.0 and Saatva 53.7. Brooklyn Bedding is a distant third at 33.3, followed by WinkBeds and Tempur-Pedic, both at 26.0.
Helix’s four wins were side sleepers, hybrids, soft mattresses and couples. Saatva’s back pain win came with all three engines ranking it first, and on couples it came close, 80 to Helix’s 87.
Google AI Overviews gave five of its ten first places to Helix. Gemini named Saatva in 9 of its 10 answers and ranked it first three times.
All three engines named the same #1 on 4 of the 10 questions: Helix for side sleepers and hybrids, Saatva for back pain and Brooklyn Bedding for firm mattresses.
Where do the engines split?
On the other six questions the answers spread out:
- Hot sleepers: Tempur-Pedic and Purple tied at 60. Each engine picked a different #1 (Purple, Brooklyn Bedding and Helix), and Tempur-Pedic shared the win without any engine ranking it first. It placed fourth, third and second.
- Budget: Siena won at 80, though ChatGPT ranked Zinus first and AI Overviews Nectar. Siena is named in 10% of answers overall.
- Heavy people: Brooklyn Bedding won at 93. Gemini was the exception, ranking Big Fig first.
- Couples and soft mattresses: On both, ChatGPT put WinkBeds first, Gemini Saatva and AI Overviews Helix.
Brooklyn Bedding shows a different pattern. It was the most-mentioned brand on 16 of the 92 cited pages we could read, more than Saatva (13) or Helix (9), yet it ranks third. Nectar led 10 pages and was named on only 5 of the 10 questions. Why page presence and AI rankings line up for some brands and not others, the data does not show.
In all, the engines named 28 brands; Serta and Beautyrest were not named in any of the 30 answers, Sealy was missing from 9 of the 10 questions, and Casper, Sleep Number and Tuft & Needle from 8 each.
What are the engines reading?
The engines cited 190 sources from 67 websites, and 95.3% were sites the mattress brands do not own. Sleep review sites carry most of the weight. Tom’s Guide was cited 17 times, 15 of them by ChatGPT. Sleep Foundation was cited 13 times across 9 questions, and Mattress Nerd and NapLab 9 each. YouTube is the second most cited website, with 24 citations, split between Gemini (10) and AI Overviews (14). ChatGPT cited no YouTube videos or Reddit threads. Google Shopping cards made up 30.5% of AI Overviews’ citations.
What should mattress marketers take from this?
To me, the mattress shortlist in AI answers looks a lot like the one on sleep review sites and in video reviews. The top three brands each appear on about two-thirds or more of the cited pages we read: Saatva on 71%, Helix on 68% and Brooklyn Bedding on 66%. Whether that coverage causes the rankings or just travels with them, the data cannot say. It is still where I would start.
For a brand outside the top group, that makes the work specific: Tom’s Guide and Sleep Foundation for ChatGPT, YouTube for Gemini and AI Overviews.
November will show whether hot sleepers, which ended in a tie, settles on one brand, and whether Saatva turns any of its second places into firsts. The full tables are in the full October 2026 report.
How we measured: We asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews 10 non-branded mattress buying questions, giving 30 answers, collected on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location. AI answers vary by time, place and user. The full method and notice are in the report.
