AEO INDEX OCTOBER 2026 USA: AI names a different insurer first on each of ten insurance questions, and the three engines agree on only one

State Farm leads the October 2026 AEO Index for insurance, while insurers’ own websites supply more than a fifth of what Google AI Overviews cites.

Ten insurance questions put to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, covering car, home, life, pet and other cover, produced ten different winners, according to Answer Engine Daily’s October 2026 AEO Index. Analysis was powered by markaeo.com. No company wins twice. The three engines agree on the top company for exactly one question, motorcycle insurance, where all three choose Progressive.
State Farm leads overall, with an AI Rank Score of 32.3 and 5 first places out of 30 answers, more than any other insurer. USAA follows at 27.7 and Amica at 20.0. USAA is the most visible company, named in 53% of answers, and it is ranked first twice, both times on car insurance. Tables are in the full October 2026 report. We collected the answers on 21 October 2026 from one U.S. location.
The AI Rank Score weights a company by how high it sits in an answer, from 0 to 100, and a company first on every engine for every question would score 100. With ten separate products, the same names rarely carry over between questions, which keeps every score low.
Who comes first for each type of cover?
Each product has its own winner, and on several of them the engines split three ways:
- Car: USAA wins with 80. ChatGPT ranked State Farm first.
- Home: Amica wins with 93.
- Renters: State Farm wins with 93.
- Life: Northwestern Mutual wins with 80. Gemini picked Banner Life and AI Overviews Nationwide.
- Pet: Pets Best wins with 67. ChatGPT picked Healthy Paws and Gemini Lemonade.
- Health: Kaiser Permanente wins with 93, ahead of Blue Cross Blue Shield at 87.
- Travel: Travelex wins with 80, though ChatGPT and Gemini both ranked Allianz first.
- Dental: Delta Dental wins with 93.
- Motorcycle: Progressive scores 100, the only unanimous pick.
- Umbrella: Chubb wins with 80. Gemini picked State Farm and AI Overviews Auto-Owners.
Travel is the close one: Allianz is first on two engines and still finishes at 77, behind Travelex. The engines have habits, too. Gemini ranks State Farm first three times. ChatGPT gives two of its first places to Amica, and it names USAA in half its answers without once ranking it first.
Why do insurers’ own websites show up so often?
Mostly because of one engine. Of 176 sources from 88 websites, 23 (13.1%) belong to insurers, mostly cited by Google AI Overviews, where owned pages make up 21.6% of citations. Progressive’s own site was cited four times, all in AI Overviews. There were no Google Shopping cards for insurance.
The rest is largely personal finance and review publishers. NerdWallet was cited 16 times across seven questions, by all three engines. YouTube follows with 14, nearly all from AI Overviews, then Forbes with 10 and U.S. News with 8. ChatGPT cited 41 sources, none from Reddit or YouTube, and Gemini cited sources in 5 of its 10 answers.
The data does not show why AI Overviews leans on insurers’ pages more than the other two engines do.
Where do the large carriers appear?
The big national names compete mostly on car, home, renters and umbrella cover, and State Farm and USAA are named on all four. Liberty Mutual was not named for 3 of the 4 questions where it would be expected (car, home and renters). No engine named GEICO or Progressive for renters, Allstate for motorcycle, or MetLife and Aetna for dental.
What should insurance marketers make of it?
My read is that, as far as these engines are concerned, “insurance” is ten separate markets. Here the carriers named most for car and home do not win pet, life or travel, and a specialist like Pets Best or Delta Dental can win its product with almost no presence elsewhere. I would measure each product line as its own AEO program, engine by engine.
The owned-page number is the other thing I’d act on. When a fifth of AI Overviews’ citations are insurers’ own pages, the product pages are part of the AEO work on Google, whether teams treat them that way or not.
November will show whether any company manages to win two questions, and whether the engines agree on more than one. Engine-level detail is in the full October 2026 report.
How we measured: we asked 10 insurance buying questions on 3 engines, for 30 answers, collected on 21 October 2026 from a single U.S. location. AI answers vary by time, place and user. The full method and notice are in the report.
